PA Dutch Apple Dumplings are a classic American dessert originating from the Pennsylvania Dutch community where I grew up. They consist of whole apples, peeled and cored, wrapped in a homemade pie crust and baked until golden brown. The apples are softened with a sweet mixture of cinnamon, sugar before being enveloped in the pastry. Once baked, they are served warm with a serving of warm milk. You can also serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It’s the perfect balance of tartness from the apples and the sweetness of cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients
-
4 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 T. Baking powder
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
¼ cup sugar
-
1 ½ cups shortening
-
⅓ - ½ cup cold water
-
8 medium tart apples, peeled and cored
-
8 teaspoon butter, divided
-
10 teaspoons cinnamon sugar, divided
Directions
In a large bowl, or food processor, combine flour, baking power, salt and sugar. Cut in shortening until crumbly or add to food processor and pulse about 10 times.
Gradually add water and toss with a fork until dough forms a ball. If using food processor, add water and pulse 10 times until combined. Do not over mix.
Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. While dough rests, prepare apples and cinnamon sugar. Once chilled, divide into 6-8 equal portions.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll each portion of dough into a small square. Place an apple on each square. Place 1 teaspoon butter and 1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar in the center of each apple.
Gently bring up corners of dough to the center, trimming any excess and pinch to seal. Place dumplings with the seam side down on a prepared cookie sheet. Sprinkle dough with cinnamon sugar.
Bake until apples are tender and pastry is golden brown, approximately 50-55 minutes. Serve warm.
