My Italian bestie from CA, Diana, gave me this recipe and it is the only recipe I use. It is a classic Italian dish made of layered pasta sheets, rich meat, creamy ricotta cheese, and a savory tomato sauce, then topped with mozzarella cheese. Baked to perfection, it’s a comforting and hearty meal. Serve with a green salad and warmed bread.

Ingredients

4 oz. Cream cheese, softened

8 oz. ricotta cheese

¼ cup sour cream

1 egg

1 teaspoon garlic powder

¼ cup parsley, chopped

½ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

1 Tablespoon olive oil

1 yellow onion, finely chopped

1 lb. Ground beef

⅓ lb. Mild sausage

3 garlic cloves minced

1 - 40 oz jar of your favorite sauce (Rao is a good choice)

12 lasagna noodles

2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded for layering and topping

Directions
Cheese Filling
In a medium sized bowl, combine all the cheese filling ingredients and set aside.
Meat Sauce
Heat olive oil over medium heat and add chopped onion. Let them cook to soften for 10 minutes. Add the ground beef and sausage and brown meat. Use a spatula to break up the meat so you have fine, crumbled pieces. Add the chopped garlic and cook for one minute. Drain the meat if needed.
Add the jar of sauce to your meat mixture. Bring to a boil and then reduce to simmer. Cover while you are preparing your lasagna noodles.
Lasagna
Using a large pot of salted water, cook the noodles to al dente according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water.
Assembling Lasagna
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a 9x13 glass dish, spread 1 cup of your meat sauce to the bottom of the dish.
Add 4 lasagna noodles, overlapping if needed. Spoon ⅓ of the cheese mixture over the noodles and swirl gently, followed by 1 cup of sauce and sprinkle ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese.
Top with 4 more lasagna noodles, ⅓ of the cheese mixture, 1 cup of sauce and ¼ cup shredded mozzarella.
Finish with 4 more lasagna noodles, the rest of the cheese mixture, the remainder of meat sauce. Top with the rest of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray and place the spray side down on top of the baking dish to prevent the cheese from sticking to it.
Bake @350 degrees for 35 minutes. Remove the foil and cook for another 10 minutes.
Allow to sit for 10 minutes prior to cutting to allow the layers to set. Serve with garlic bread.
